In case your rear main seal starts leaking, it won't fill the area with fluid and not let you know you're leaking... basically, if it filled (i.e. no hole) you'd eventually get fluid on your flywheel/clutch and your clutch would start slipping... and not only would you need a new rear main or oil pain seal, you'd need a new clutch and flywheel assembly...
Its supposed to be there to answer your main question.
